Eastampton Township
Government

Eastampton Township Council consists of five members elected at large to staggered four year terms.  The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are selected each year by their peers on the Council.  It is the Mayor’s responsibility to preside over the Council, chair Council meetings and serve as spokesperson for the community.  The Mayor also signs all contracts and obligations of the Township and is empowered to perform marriages.

The residents of Eastampton  adopted the Council-Manager form of government in 1982.  Although limited in use in New Jersey, it is the most widely used form of government in the U.S. and is endorsed by the National Municipal League.

A key feature of the Council-Manager plan is its similarity to a modern corporation, which provides for separation between the legislative and administrative functions.  The Council as a whole is vested with the highest policy making authority in the Township.  The Council hires a professional Manager to oversee day-to-day operations of the Township, keep Council informed on the financial condition and operational status of the Township and implement the decisions of the Council efficiently.  The Manager serves at the pleasure of the Council.

Township Council normally meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month, at which time they consider resolutions and ordinances critical to the overall quality of life in the community.  It is also an opportunity for the Council to consult with and guide the work of the professional staff.

In addition to the Manager, the Council employs the Township Clerk and the Township Solicitor who are present at each meeting.  The Clerk organizes the agenda, keeps the minutes of the meetings, records votes, and holds all the important municipal documents and is also the Election Official of the Township.  The Solicitor drafts legislation, provides legal guidance when needed and defends the Township  in any legal proceedings.

Residents are invited at the beginning of each meeting to comment on any issues affecting the community.  If residents have a unique request of the Council, it can be brought up at this time.  Residents are encouraged to contact Council members or the municipal staff any time they have a question, comment or concern about any issued effecting them or the municipality.  Click here for meeting minutes and agendas.
